His name is Stephen Rich Nelson and is a glass artist from Pennsylvania. He has had many different exhibits all over the United States.

Stephen uses many different forms of art. He creates vessels, cast sculptures, goddess, neoclassics, beauties, and other types of work. Stephen chooses many different colors and makes his work interesting the viewers. His pieces are ablaze with bright colors and gentle, organic forms that suggest the leaves, fruits and flowers of an island paradise. He also can make personalized artwork for ones home if they desire his creativity.

I picked his artwork to incorporate into my “fake” gallery space because I love all the colors and different forms that he creates. I like colorful art because it grabs ones attention and is interesting to everyone. Can you ever say that you did not pay attention to something Raspberry, red, blue, and light purple, then textured with surrounding dots along the artwork? I think Stephen is a very talented glass artist and I enjoy his different pieces of artwork.

Week 14

For our end of the year spring project my group decided to incorporate a jacket. This jacket was going to be very unique which would include special features of a map to a homeless shelter, camouflage texture to blend into areas, and other amenities.

I think that the camouflage texture is very easily recognized pattern since it is used very often in hunting and other activities. The pattern uses mostly greens, browns, tans, and sometimes oranges and black. There are so many different variety of ways to incorporate theses different colors. Some mesh all-together like they are melting and others use more linear qualities.

In our project we also chose to hide an object. We hid brown houses into our coat to symbolize that these homeless are just what they are labeled, without a home. They do not have the same opportunities as most American citizens because they do not have a shelter to reside in. This is why our coat is so symbolic and should catch the viewer’s eye.

I really like wearing camouflage hats and I think the pattern can be fun as well. It is usually shown on many various things and now they even have fashion jackets and shirts that use this kind of fabric. This indeed shows how multi-purpose this pattern is to everyone and how widely it is reconginized.

Week 13

For our Art Activism Dirty project my group is concentrating on homelessness. Since we are in art class also I decided to find an artist or artists on this subject. I found there is a program in which the homeless can work on art and display their work.

These exhibits feature ceramics, drawings, and paintings. This program helps to further the artistic abilities of these individuals. It also creates a safe environment in which the homeless can work. This creates a safe place for them and also helps them find a voice in the world through their creative artwork.

I think that this is very interesting concept to show the homeless’ work to the public. I believe it would give a insight into how they are feeling about the situation that they are in and that they are trying to do something positive with there lives. Personally I believe that our public does not think that the homeless have much drive to get out of the streets and start on the right track. This program illustrates that the homeless is going into the right direction if they are just given the chance to excel.

This program should be offered more widely. I think it is a great idea for our public to offer to the homeless.

Week 12

In art class we talked about the different color systems. Munsell’s color system and the basic first color wheel also. These color wheels are made up of so many different colors that all are incorporated into one form. I found this color system and I thought it was a work of art by itself.

The color system is mostly intense hues. The chroma is high because the colors have not be mixed with black or white which then does not mute the colors. The colors twist and differ in the color which creates depth and interest to the viewer’s eye. The colors twist and you can gaze down into the different wraps of color. The different colors implemented are blue, green, purple, red, orange, yellow, and pink. The yellow and green are paired together, the red and purple are paired together, and the pink and purple are also put together. Then they other colors are paired with different variants of their own color and different colors are wined together.

I really like this art form because it is very interesting with the details of twists and colors. It is almost bead like with the variants in color and it is very exciting to see how color can create this effect on the color system.

Week 11

Lately in class we have been talking about the different color schemes used in art. I know in my major, interior design, we focus heavily on the knowledge of these colors. I have found a painting which depicts an analogous color scheme. An analogous color scheme is when ¼ of the color wheel is used in art.

This painting uses a tint of black which is neutral color. So then the colors which are analogous are green, blue-green, and blue. There are different shades and tints of these colors but they are all incorporated in the painting. It seems that the color is splashed on with a paintbrush and is very random but connected. As you can tell that this painting is still interesting with the variant of textures and different ways the 3 colors are implemented in the painting.

I really enjoy different colors and it is interesting how one can implement the different schemes to make color selections. Colors have such a variety in range and opportunity. They can create a warm piece or a cool one. Depending on how one artist uses color determines what kind of feel the piece will exhibit. I really enjoy this painting and I think that the analogous color works.

Week 10

I chose this week to write about this painting by Anne Stahl. The painting is called “Andradite.” This piece is from Anne Stahl’s exhibition titled, Gem. These pieces where showcased starting in 2005. The reason she made these pieces is to show the conflict between the beauty of gemstones and the cost at which they are mined. She decided to mirror these images in her painting. Anne hopes that people will make better decisions. Her work shows different abstract landscapes.

Anne Stahl used many different methods to achieve her product of work. She used layers of paint and wax. Each piece carries a similarity to the next since she used the same materials. She has a very interesting concept for her artwork and her painting are very interesting to the eyes. The paintings have different layers and colors that grab the your attention and are very beautiful.

I found this artist while I was trying to find an artist to include in my interior design gallery project. Anne’s artwork is contemporary and also abstract. I really enjoy her collection and the ideas behind them. My interior design project is creating a space in which an artist could display their artwork, and I would love to have her paintings in my gallery. Even though the project is not an actual gallery!

Blog assignment #5

Since I am an interior design major Shashi Caan is a very interesting designer to me. I find it very interesting that Shashi Caan was born in India was educated in Scotland then went to New York to obtain 2 masters degrees. Shashi Caan has extensive knowledge in both architecture and interior design. Her viewpoints are very interesting and individualistic.

Shashi Caan had contributed a lot to the interior design field. Shashi Caan is now the head of the department of interior design at Parsons. She is a designer of lots of talent and has accomplishments in architecture, industrial and interior design. She has worked for major New York firms such as Swanke Hayden Connell Architects, and Gensler Associates, and most recently, as an Associate Partner at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill Architects.

About four years ago Shashi Caan launched a textile collection called “Bridging” to be followed more recently by a new collection named “Structures". She has designed new office furniture for ICF/Helikon, two collections of carpet designs for Lee's in collaboration with several other major designers, and a new brand image and color collection for an Italian manufacturer of finishes.

Shashi Caan’s interior spaces are very organized with straight lines and colorful patterns. Her rooms are to scale and appropriate to her audience and clients. She is a very renowned teacher and designer. Shashi has been awarded many different honors for both of these aspects. She likes to create a learning environment and create interiors while doing this. Shashi is a very notable speaker and many try to get her to come and give a lecture.

I find it very inspiring that Shashi has come around the world to produce such glorious collections. She has many different hats she wears such as teacher, artist, business entrepreneur, and designer. She has such energy in her collections and I really admire that about her.

Week 9

This image is an example of asymmetrical design. This means that the room does not have a balance and is not symmetrical. Asymmetrical balance is when a visual equilibrium is achieved by using different qualities. These qualities can be scale or placement of the elements in the room change the symmetry.

The room also uses different colors in the room. The room uses intense colors along with more muted tones and shades. The room has a more casual feel to it and is done by using the different tones of colors. It is also exciting since it incorporates red, yellow, and green.

I enjoy this room because it has so many different colors in it. It creates a nice space to be in and around. It is comfortable yet classy. The designer also chose nice accessories to accentuate the features of the room’s environment. There are also different pattern motifs which help the space to not become static and boring. The colors around make the room pop and stand out. Also the rooms lighting is from artificial lighting around the room. There is some lighting from the windows which is radiating in, this creates a nice atmosphere when working with the different colors.

Week 8

Since I am an interior design major at Bowling Green State University I decided to write about something that goes along with my major. This image is a model of a room that is set in black and white scale. I think that this picture also goes along with the things we are talking about in class for our “story” project.

The floor is set in white with black detailing which illuminates the chairs and table. The table has a descending gradient which cascades down in scale to a lighter gray color. The lines on the wall create interest to the eye because they match the floor. The black lines create a good contrast to the floor since they are opposite black and white combinations.

I think this room is probably a office of some type since there is not a lot of furniture and it is not too comfortable looking. I think the colors of the white and black are interesting and I enjoy how the white illuminates the space. I find that this relates a lot to what we are talking about in our next project. You can find examples of the black and white scale of colors everywhere.

Week 7

After our meeting I have been thinking a lot about meanings of my pieces. And Although I have put forth some meanings of the work I have done they really do not have too much depth. I decided this next project has a lot of meaning to me. It is a pretty simple concept, a tree.

Yes a tree can have many meanings to many different people. The symbol of a tree always makes me think of one thing and that is my childhood. This makes me think of my childhood because I had a glorious tree fort growing up. In turn the tree conveys happiness, friendship (since my friend Kaylan always accompanied me), nature, growth, and like I stated before my childhood.

I think this next project is really going to convey meaning to my artwork. I really am excited about this next project because I really feel I picked a good subject for my painting. Making my pieces of art meaningful can be hard for me because I like just making things try to look pretty at times. This project will show that I do have a background to my life and that the tree displayed on my paper actually means something.

Week 6

My absolute favorite flower is the sunflower. Since it is winter and about time to turn to spring I am getting tired of this long cold windy town. I decided to do this week’s art blog on a painting of sunflowers.

Sunflowers are so warm and inviting. This painting is by Lynn Jaye, called “Sunflower Lane.” This painting creates a winding road with beautiful sights on either side of it. I would really enjoy walking down the path and looking at all the wonderful flowers.

It has a sense of balance because the flowers are on either side of the path. It also has a foreground, which are the flowers. The middle ground of the painting which has the Italian looking villa. Then it also has a background, which consists of the winding hills and far side villa. The color scheme is of yellows, browns, greens, and some blues. It is not very elaborate with color but it is very beautiful to look at.

This is a good painting that illustrates the foreground, middle ground, and background rule. Looking at this painting by Lynn Jaye helps me better understand what I should do for my next project and how to utilize the different grounds. Hopefully I will have a strong sense of grounds as this painting has.

Blog Assignment #4

Art: 21 PLACE

Do we define a place? Or does that place define us? I believe that it is a little bit of both aspects. Everyone looks at places as something different. The zoo could be full of wonderdorous animals to some people and to others horrible and smelly. Places can be intimate, special, secrets, energizing, and calm.

Each of the artists that we saw were interested in different types of spaces. Richard was inspired by ships of large masses which he portrayed in his huge structures. Sally Mann was insprired by anything really, but she loved the beauitful outdoors. Margret and Bobbie were inspired by everyday art. Pepon Osorio was inspired by things in his life, such as the barber shop.

I have always realized that art expresses a place that someone wants to visit, or has visited, or loves, or hate. Places are so different and all have different appealing aspects to them. It depends on who the person is and what they like to look at and involve themselves with.

I felt most connected to Sally Mann because as a child I loved to run free in the outdoors. I have a river in my backyard and it has always been apart of me and a place for me to visit when needing to have fun or relax and think. I really enjoyed how she was very simple about her pieces as well.

All the aritists except Sally Mann would have some troubles transporting there art work pieces. I thought they were all interesting and all used different ways to express there feelings.

When I was young I loved trees, so naturally I had a tree fort. Me and my neighbor would spend hours in it and discuss all the things on our imaginations. Across from my house we have a lot of land and that is where the tree fort was at. A few acres down there was a burnt down house and that is the place we would never venture too, expect if we wanted to explore with our older siblings. Five places would be 1. Tree fort (Life) 2. River (Playful) 3. Pool (Fun) 4. Park (adventurous) 5. Bedroom (dwelling)

My tree fort was large and has berries growing from it. It was not the typical ideal tree to have because it got very messy. We would eat the berries or throw them at the boys who would come visit. The textures were rough and you would have to be careful when being around it. The lighting was different at different times of the day but usually less light since there were surroundings of trees.

Art 21: Stories

Many stories are told through families, the history of them. Or just life events can create some great stories, I know I love when my grandparents tell me about when they were growing up my age during there lifetimes.

Stories are told to educate and help others understand where we come from and what we are all about. Some stories could be lost if they are not interesting and if we do not want to keep them alive and thinking about them.

The artist that use sketchbooks to create there art I think are very developed as artists because they have more obsitcules than a painter. A painter can just paint on a canvas and then hang it up where as the aritsts who are telling a story have to decide how they will show the audience their story.

When I was 10 years old I still played with dolls with my baby sister at that time. I wanted to grow up and saw my older sister becoming a teenager and I wanted to be like her. Although I wanted to grow up I was still a child. I still played in the tree fort and collected worms and create projects for our neighborhood. I remember one day me and my older sister Megan went to sell magazine's for our schools drive. We went up to this house that is further out than most of the houses. Megan and I were taking turns going up to the houses so I went up this time. A boy answered the door and while he did that a huge dog started running after me and I yelled to my sister to get on her bike and the dog stopped after the drive way and we rode away.

Looking back on this I wonder how different things were in the world. We were out a little before dark knocking on doors by ourselves with my parents back a mile away. It is interesting to see how different things are not and that my much younger sister never goes down the road that far without my parents.

Week 5

I was not sure what to write about this week since we mostly did critiques. I decided that I really enjoyed Sally Mann from the PBS special and would find a photograph of hers.

Sally Mann really interested me in the way that she did not care if people did not like her children naked, but did it anyway. I think her photos are beautiful and have so much substance to them. Not only did I like how her pictures turned out and looked but also I really liked how she said that art is supposed to be fun. Some artists have very in depth meanings to a piece and yes that is interesting I enjoy just finding the beauty in work myself without thinking too much into it. You may call it lazy or not up to the full potential but why do we are humans do we have the feeling to evaluate everything? I like looking at beautiful pieces of art and taking them in for how they artist made them.

The picture of the girl and the eggs is so pretty. It seems as though there is a wind, which creates drama in the picture. The girl is shutting her eyes and her hair is blowing and tousling in the air.

Her photographs are so wonderful. She is very passionate with her work and that makes you want to look at it even more. She is very talented and interesting to learn about.

Week 4

http://www.cee.hw.ac.uk/hipr/images/bur1.gif

Lately in class we have been trying to find different textures of objects or things. Whether making them up, copying, or rubbing them onto a piece of sketchbook paper. The different textures of things create movement for your eyes and make them follow the image more closely. It makes your want to concentrate harder on the image to see what really is going on. I decided to find an image that stood out to me and created movement by the texture.

This image shows many different layers of lines woven throughout the picture. There are some clumps throughout which lead your eyes to go around the texture and observe all of it. It is black and white so color is not chosen to accentuate the texture. Through the lines your eyes get caught and stay. I this that this texture is likely a close up shot of a blanket or some type of woven fabric, maybe a type of material for clothing.

I like textures because they make the item so much more interesting to the person viewing them. I really like how you want to look at the image more carefully once your see the type of texture it has.

Blog Entry Assignment #3

1. This creates an important structure throughout your piece that you choose to accentuate. This makes the item stand out and make an impact on the viewer.

I choose a picture of a tree that I found online. This tree symbolized the importance of size along with making the lines thicker than the background trees. This creates you to look at the thicker and larger tree rather than the other smaller and thinner trees. Along with doing this your eye concentrates on the large tree with dark lines because it is in the center and had the most to look at.

In our last project we were told to create interesting pieces of work by doing some of the same things. Accentuate the important objects and highlight them. This in turn creates the effect of the tree picture. It captures the attention of the viewer and is intriguing. It stops your eye and lets you observe the different attributes that the tree posses.

It is a very good method to get peoples attention on the different things that you want them to ponder. It is a good technique and as you can see it works to pull the viewers eye in.

Week 3

Lately in class we have been talking a lot about dominance. The definition of dominant is the most prominent shape or object in a composition, usually in position, color, or size. As you tell us in class you do not just want something similar but a little bigger, you want it exaggerated.

I found a picture of different colored dots made into a dominant circle which composite a very dominant object. I really enjoy the different colors because they are bright and cheerful to look at. It also is interesting how the artist decided to group the dots together in the middle of the piece of artwork.

I find it hard to sometimes make something very exaggerated in a piece. Especially since you make the art then think, Is this too small? Which usually the answer is yes and it can be very hard to try to incorporate all the different things with such an exaggerated item.

That is the thing I am having some trouble with. I decided it can be easier if you just start off with the exaggerated object and then down grade the others to much smaller scales. I really think it is helpful and hopefully will get more used to using the exaggerated object in some of my projects when it is needed.

Week 2

As I was looking online for things to talk about I came across this Damien Hirst Piece. It is names “Theories, Models, Methods, Approaches, Assumptions, Results, and Findings. He created this piece in 2000 and I think it is very interesting to look at.

Unlike the shark we were shown I believe this piece gives a much different feeling to the viewers, or at least to me. I feel this piece is lighter feeling and symbolizes luck or fun. When you play the lottery you are taking a chance. I believe that Damien did this in his artwork and when he was doing so he wished for luck.

It is very fitting for a creation from an artist. An artist wants the best for their pieces and also wealth. Damien feels he has fit the jackpot with this artwork.

Everything that this piece is I like. With the clear inside with balls jumping and silver ball shoots at the bottom. It is such a simple thing but he makes such a statement with just enclosing it. It mean luck for him, he feels he was won the jackpot, and is very happy and having fun with this idea. I really enjoy this piece!

Blog Entry Assignment #2

In part one of my project I used the different shaped and sizes to creative contrast in my picture. I believe I created this with using the linear object to block the circular shape from exiting the left side of my picture. On the right side of the picture I used a square object to block it so that you eyes are held in the middle.

The second part of my collage I tried to created movement with the different shaped to move your eyes throughout the page. I chose to use the square as the largest. Then I decided to use the triangles, which are all different sizes, and lines, which are all different lengths, to point your eyes in all different directions. I believe that this is great movement for the viewer’s eyes.

The third collage I used shapes that had other different shapes inside of them. I think that this is a great challenge for the eyes because it keeps them roaming the piece. I do not think that they get stuck on one object or are led to the edge.

I really enjoyed doing this assignment because it was challenging since you can only use few items. These items are not allowed to have color which is sometimes hard to concentrate on and find interesting. I find that I did create such pieces.

Week 1

It is very interesting to see this butterfly because nature inspires art. This butterfly is a good example of how nature shapes art and creates many ideas for artists. From the different color schemes to the detailed lines this butterfly is truly its own art form.

This beautiful butterfly is a perfect example of symmetry. Symmetry is classified as something that is balanced. This picture shows the wings with matching patterns on both top and bottom. The colors are brown, white, black, and hints of yellow. This could be to help blend in to nature.

There is also another butterfly in the background, which displays symmetrical design as well. The colors are slightly different since this butterfly has redish-orange coloring instead of the pale yellow color. Just like the butterfly that is the focal point the other butterfly is also beautiful with the symmetrical design.

I chose this picture because I feel it demonstrates what we were learning about symmetrical objects. Looking at these insects I feel that they display a harmonious character. I really like how they look together and create a very balanced picture. I enjoy this picture and I think it is very lovely to look at.

Entry Assignment #1

I started my art background very young with the normal finger paintings and random creative projects. My parents of course treasured all of my beautiful creations. When I was around the age of 9 I took art classes for a few years with a woman who was a very great teacher for my sister and me.

Art has always been in my life whether learning about it, looking at it, or just being around it. I went to West Side Montessori middle school where we took many field trips and learned appreciate many different pieces of work. We went to museums and looked at different art work in books. My house has always been decked out in art because my mother loves art and is a docent at our local museum.

My mother is a large part of my discovery of art. She has always been behind me for exploring the different fields of it. My mother has taken my family to countless amounts of museums all over the world. Along with the museums we have also been to probably every church in Europe. At my house we have an extensive collection of glass. My parents really enjoy finding new creative people who produce such wonderful art projects.

Along with just the common definition of art there are so many other ways I am influenced. I really enjoy colors and matching and picking different schemes. I enjoy picking out my outfit for the day and choosing different colors for my mood. I find that colors can have a major influence in how one is perceived as well and how the person’s attitude is.
This is just a very general entry about art in my life. I could go on for dozen of pages taking about what inspires me as well as the other questions that were offered to answer. Art is everywhere and I really enjoy an array of different aspects of it.
